Skidaway Island State Park

Located near historic Savannah, this barrier island has both salt and fresh water due to estuaries and marshes that flow through the area. The park borders Skidaway Narrows, a part of the intracoastal waterway, and provides scenic camping and picnicking areas. Two nature trails wind through marshes, live oaks, cabbage-palmettos and longleaf pines, allowing visitors to watch for deer, raccoon, shore birds and rare migrating birds such as the Painted Bunting. Observation towers provide another chance for visitors to search for wildlife on this beautiful island. A giant ground sloth replica, birding station and other nature exhibits are featured in the park's museum.

Was here five years ago, Jan 2004, this campground has been cleaned up, a lot of the under growth and brush has been removed, however now you can see through to the other campsites, all the campsites are the layby type, and most are off set so you are not right across from each other.

There is fifty amp power at some sites, and they are the same price as the thirty amp, reservations are recommended, however they don't assign sites so a small camper may be in a fifty amp.   The rest stations are manned by volunteer staff, that do a great job when we were there, how ever when they have a day off, local voluteers do the cleaning and it was subpar, compared to the regular camp host.  The firewood is a large bundle for $5.00 and burned good, the ice is only a $1.00 a bag a bargain now adays.  However the washers and dryers are the same as last time, and the dryers are getting really tired, it takes a while to dry clothes. The campground has cable at no charge, they only have a few channels, but worked good.

This rate is with a senior discount. A beautiful state park with nice, big pull-thru sites. Lots of shade.  A little buggy but that's to be expected.  We had a 50 amp site with water, electric and cable TV. A nice mix between the rustic of a state park and some of the convenience of a private campground. At least when we were there, before Memorial Day, you could reserve a site, but not a specific one. You drove through the park and picked one without a tag hanging on the pole. Having never been to this park before, I don't know it that is the practice throughout the summer or not.   The spaces are very wide and nicely spaced. There was a picnic table on the raised pad and a fire pit. We would definitely stay here again. You are not crowded at all.  Deer and lots of squirrels roam in the park.  There is one washer and dryer in each comfort station.  Campground hosts are in each circle and sell firewood for $5 per bundle. There is wi fi available at the picnic table outside the office.  Good reception and speed. Electric outlet in the ceiling if you look up.  It was not available at our site.   Some of the turns in the roads in the park are a little narrow and you have to be careful making some of the turns. The gate closes at 10 pm, but you are given a code to get in should you come back late.  Easy access to Savannah via Truman Parkway.   We would stay here again.
